
Monica Lamela
Lecturer
Monica Lamela is the founding principal of There There, an award-winning architecture practice based in Los Angeles working across California, Mexico, and Europe. A 2019 Fulbright Fellow, her research and practice explore how architecture can reveal hidden narratives and bring people, materials, and histories into dialogue. Her work has been recognized with awards from The Architect’s Newspaper Best of Practice and Best of Design Awards, the AIA Next LA Awards, Europan, and The Chicago Athenaeum Future House Awards. There There’s projects have been exhibited at the Wedge Gallery, 14th São Paulo Architecture Biennial, and A+D Museum in Los Angeles, and featured in GA Houses, Bauwelt, and The Architect’s Newspaper.
Born in Madrid, Monica’s career spans over a decade of international practice in Berlin, Paris, and Mexico City, where she collaborated with Francis Kéré, Lacaton & Vassal, and Tatiana Bilbao Estudio. She holds a Master in Architecture from the Escuela Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM) and a M.S. in Architecture Theory from UC Berkeley. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design.
